Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency ablation reduces pain by ablating nerves that send pain signals to the brain. The procedure involves injecting a microelectrode after sedation, followed by stimulation testing using live fluoroscopy to confirm correct placement.Once verified, the radiofrequency electrode is heated, burning the surrounding tissue and nerves. Light intravenous sedation is offered and recommended to minimize discomfort during the procedure.RFA typically requires 4-6 weeks to reach full effectiveness as soft tissues heal. Pain relief generally lasts 1-2 years, making it one of the longer-lasting interventional pain treatments available.
After Your Procedure
Patients should expect a recovery period of 4-6 weeks for RFA to reach full effectiveness as soft tissues heal from the procedure. Some soreness at the injection site is common in the days following treatment.A less frequent side effect involves a sunburn-type sensation at the procedure site due to the radiofrequency energy used. Ice and over-the-counter pain medications are recommended to manage any discomfort during the healing phase.Once fully healed, patients can expect pain relief lasting 1-2 years. Your physician will monitor your progress and discuss next steps as part of your ongoing pain management plan.
