Kyphoplasty / Vertebroplasty
Kyphoplasty addresses compression fractures resulting from osteoporosis or trauma. The procedure involves inserting and inflating a small balloon inside damaged vertebrae, then delivering a cement-like substance to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.
Performed under conscious sedation in an outpatient setting, most procedures take under one hour. Patients typically experience immediate pain relief and can resume normal activities shortly after.
Walking, weight-bearing exercises, and normal bending are encouraged. Patients should avoid lifting objects exceeding 5 pounds for three months. A fitted back brace may be prescribed for additional support.
After Your Procedure
The procedure sites may be sore or mildly uncomfortable for a few days before resolving. Pain relief is usually immediate, though one to two percent of patients may experience a temporary increase in pain that is typically managed with analgesics.
Lifting objects heavier than 5 pounds should be avoided for three months or as directed by your physician. After three months and being released by your physician, you can gradually increase lifting to normal levels.
Walking and weight-bearing exercises are encouraged, and bending can be done normally. Your provider may also prescribe a fitted back brace to decrease the chance of developing kyphosis and help with any additional discomfort.
